Nazareth

Village in Lower Galilee

Center point of the map

A small Jewish village on the southern edge of Lower Galilee. It stood close enough to Sepphoris and regional roads to feel the movement of labor, taxes, travelers, and news.

Walking from Nazareth

Sepphoris: about 4 to 5 miles, 1.5 to 2 hours.
Cana: about 6 to 8 miles, 2 to 3 hours. The traditional location is shown.
Nain: about 8 to 10 miles, 3 to 4 hours.
Ptolemais: about 24 to 28 miles, roughly 1.5 days.
Capernaum: about 28 to 32 miles, roughly 1.5 to 2 days.
Caesarea Maritima: about 38 to 45 miles, roughly 2 to 3 days.
Mount Gerizim: about 43 to 50 miles, roughly 2.5 to 3 days.
Shiloh: about 50 to 58 miles, roughly 3 days.
Traditional baptism area: about 68 to 78 miles, roughly 4 days. The precise site is not known.
Jerusalem: about 70 to 80 miles by a direct inland route, usually 4 to 5 days. A Jordan Valley route could take 5 to 7 days.

Estimates assume approximately 15 to 20 miles per day for a healthy traveler. A family group, pack animals, steep terrain, weather, crowds, and security concerns could lengthen any journey.

Notes for the reader

Date and government. The map represents the closing years of Herod the Great's reign, approximately 6 to 4 BCE. Galilee, Samaria, Judea, Idumea, and Perea were parts of Herod's client kingdom under Roman supremacy. The colored divisions are geographic and cultural guides, not surveyed borders.
Nazareth and Sepphoris. Nazareth is placed at the center. Sepphoris lay only several miles to the north and was the principal urban center of Lower Galilee. Its exact size and the extent of its destruction after Herod's death remain debated.⁴
Trade routes. The named roads are corridors reconstructed from terrain, ancient settlements, later road evidence, and historical atlases. Travelers often followed several local tracks rather than one permanently paved line. Every route on this map is intentionally labeled approximate.²
Tiberias is absent. Herod Antipas founded Tiberias later, around 19 CE. It did not exist as a city when Jesus was born.⁷
Shiloh. Archaeology supports occupation during the early Roman period, but the settlement's size in Jesus' lifetime remains uncertain. Its importance on the map comes primarily from its much earlier role as Israel's sanctuary. The New Testament does not record Jesus visiting it.⁹
Mount Gerizim. The Samaritan sacred mountain rises south of ancient Shechem. Its earlier sanctuary was destroyed before Jesus' lifetime; the mountain remained significant to worship there. Eliab's village below it is fictional.¹⁰
Walking times. Distances are rounded route estimates, not modern driving distances. They are included to help readers feel the scale of the story rather than to prescribe an exact itinerary.
The journey into Chapter 1. Luke records the family's Passover journey to Jerusalem and Jesus' return to Nazareth at age twelve. The novel begins on that road home.⁸
Ptolemais. This Mediterranean port, also known historically as Acco and later Acre, appears in Acts 21:7. Paul and his companions arrived from Tyre, greeted the believers there, and stayed for one day before continuing toward Caesarea and Jerusalem.¹¹
